Q & A With Lacey

Q: What do you love about writing?
(Asked by Mary Winter of Sensual Romances)

I love the act of creating a story. I'm a die-hard plotter, so I have a solid outline by the time I sit at my computer and begin to write. The time I spend getting to know my characters and watching the idea take shape is my favorite, followed closely by the editing process. I love getting to polish a draft with the assistance of my fabulous critique partner, my beta readers and my editor. Everything in between is hard work!

Q: Do you have a guilty indulgence? Something you do just for you. Want to share?
(Asked by Mary Winter of Sensual Romances)

I play video games! My usual addictions range around fantasy-based MMORPGs (Everquest) and single player RPGs (Oblivion, Morrowind, Neverwinter Nights), but lately I've been hooked on playing Poker on my Wii. What can I say? I work for a software company. I'm a geek at heart!

Q: If you could spend a secluded weekend somewhere, where would you go and why?
(Asked by Mary Winter of Sensual Romances)

Oh, definitely Mexico. My husband and I got married on the beach and now we go back every year. I'd love to go more often than once a year, but until I win the lottery or consistently begin to hit the New York Times Bestseller list, that's not likely to happen. So if I could just fly somewhere on a whim, I'd go to my favorite resort in the Mayan Riviera... with my husband, of course. :-)

Q: What inspired you to write Fighting Chance?
(Asked by Susan of Lady Jaided, Ellora's Cave Magazine)

Honestly? A few lines from a song. I was driving home from work one afternoon, and "You're Beautiful" by James Blunt came on the radio. Although I'd heard the song a hundred times before and loved it each time, it never resonated with me more powerfully than it did that day. In particular, this stanza knocked my socks off:

My life is brilliant
My love is pure.
I saw an angel.
Of that I'm sure.
She smiled at me on the subway.
She was with another man.
But I won't lose no sleep on that,
'Cause I've got a plan.

And I thought... whoa! What if the hero was doomed to run into his mate, again and again, with no way of keeping her by his side? By the time I got home, I had the start of a solid story idea. Five months later, I'd sold the book to Ellora's Cave.

Q: What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
(Asked by Susan of Lady Jaided, Ellora's Cave Magazine)

Aside from writing, I love to read. It's an obsession, really, as my husband is quick to point out. My TBR pile is at over 1,500 books in print, and somewhere around 600 e-books.

Q: What authors do you enjoy reading?
(Asked by Tara Renee of TwoLips Reviews)

I'm an absolute book fiend, so my list of favorite authors numbers in the hundreds. If I had to pick just a few, I'd list: Aubrey Ross, Caitlyn Willows, Fiona Jayde, Adrianna Dane, Trixie Stiletto, Isabella Jordan, Lyndi Lamont, Beth Kery, Lorie O'Clare, Michele Bardsley, Renee George, Dakota Cassidy, Shelby Morgen, Denise Rossetti, Mechele Armstrong, Kira Stone, Willa Okati, Ally Blue, Kate Hill, Sahara Kelly... and that's just in electronic format. In paperback, some of my favorites are: Janet Evanovich, Guy Gavriel Kay, Connie Willis, Jennifer Armintrout, Donna Boyd, Lilith Saintcrow, Kim Wilkins, Tad Williams, Jayne Castle, Alice Borchardt, Louisa Burton, Syne Mitchell, Lisa Jackson, Tami Hoag, Gail Dayton, Julie Kenner, Tamara Siller Jones, Laurell K. Hamilton, Robin Hobb, Lynn Flewelling... Wow. Someone stop me before this entire interview turns into one long list of authors' names!

Q: Is there any heroine from one of your books who you would change places with?
(Asked by Tara Renee of TwoLips Reviews)

I'm one of those lucky women who absolutely adores her life, so I don't think I'd want to change places permanently with any of my heroines. But just for one night, I'd love to be Heidi (from SUMMONING DARKNESS, DARKNESS BECOMES HER and SEDUCED BY DARKNESS). Her boys really know how to show a girl a good time.

Q: Which of your heroes would you like to have come to life and sweep you away?
(Asked by Tara Renee of TwoLips Reviews)

That would definitely have to be Kirel from my Ellora's Cave release, ALL THE KING'S MEN. I've never written a hero quite so devoted, so tortured and so smoldering all at once. I was actually jealous of the heroine a time or two as I wrote!

Q: Several of your books feature menage themes and all of your books feature stellar love scenes. Do you ever fear you may be going to far with a particular love scene and if so, how do you rein the scene in?
(Asked by Tara Renee of TwoLips Reviews)

Oh, all the time! The secret is not to rein the scene in. I think the reason my love scenes are the way they are is because I write what turns me on. (Warning: Too Much Information ahead. Stop now if you don't want that much reality with your author interview.)

If a love scene doesn't have me squirming in my seat knowing I'll have to get a clean pair of panties after this writing session, I scrap it and start over. I've done that a number of times. That's likely also why I write as many ménage scenes as I do... and why I'm starting to explore elements of BDSM in my books. My fantasies evolve as I change and grow as a person, but one thing stays the same: the emotion between the hero (or heroes) and heroine is paramount to the story. If that doesn't take center stage, I can write the most adventurous love scene ever to be immortalized on paper, but it won't turn me-or the reader-on.

Q: Do you ever get up at 3 am just to write?
(Asked by Tara Renee of TwoLips Reviews)

Heck, no! I don’t get up at 3am to do anything.

Q: What's the most interesting thing you've ever done?
(Asked by Susan of Lady Jaided, Ellora's Cave Magazine)

Ever? Gosh, you sure know how to put a girl on the spot. I think the most interesting thing I've ever done was presenting my fiance to my parents at the age of 18. He was 23 at the time, and my parents instantly adored him. Three months later, we were married on a tropical beach in the Caribbean, with our families by our side (we got them all-expense-paid tickets to our wedding!). That was exactly eight years ago today, and I couldn't be happier! Marrying the love of my life after a whirlwind courtship was the best decision I've ever made.

Q: Changeling Press is a dynamo publisher in a list of many talented publishers out there. What drew you to Changeling Press as you were looking to submit your story? What sets Changeling, in your opinion, apart from other publishers?
(Asked by Tracey of The Road to Romance)

Aren't they wonderful? I've been a huge fan of Changeling Press ever since they first opened their doors. The first book I ever read from Changeling was Blood and Soul 1: Vampire Master by Kate Hill, and it absolutely blew me away. I knew right then and there I wanted to write for them. In my opinion, what sets Changeling apart from other publishers is the unconventional, the unexpected, and their unabated passion for all things erotic.

Q: What is your favourite holiday?
(Asked by Tracey of The Road to Romance)

New Year's, definitely. After all, I got married New Year's day. It's a major celebration every year at my house, though it's always a private party for two...

Q: Lacey, where do you come up with these men? Just reading the book blurbs has me drooling. Are they completely out of your imagination (and if so, can I move in?), or do you get inspiration from the real world, too?
(Asked by Sierra Dafoe of A Cheeky Changeling)

A little bit of both, I think. I'm a very visual person. One of the first things I do when I have a basic idea of who my hero will be, is hunt for an appropriate picture to represent him. I do the same thing for the heroine, and tack both pictures up on a cork-board right by my computer screen. That way I only have to turn my head and I can "see" my hero. It makes it much easier to envision him smirking, scowling, fighting, making love, whatever. :)

Q: Of all the steamy scenes you've written, what one is your personal favorite?
(Asked by Sierra Dafoe of A Cheeky Changeling)

Oh, my... that's a tough one. I get so into all of them when I'm writing that it's hard for me to choose. If I had to pick one, I'd say my favorite is one from Feral Magnetism, in which Brad, J.C. and Eve have a threesome. The men tie Eve to a table while they indulge in her body. It was wonderful for me to see her come to terms with her own pleasure, and I really enjoyed Brad and J.C.'s reactions, too.

Q: And which one is something you'd love to try?
(Asked by Sierra Dafoe of A Cheeky Changeling)

Mmm... that's one from Finders Keepers, my contribution to the Paranormal Mates Society series. Claudia and Xander have hot, steamy, almost angry sex outside up against a tree, where anyone can come upon them at any moment. I'd love the thrill of that!
